Color Drenching with Tile? (Yes, Really!)
I know, I know—color drenching is everywhere right now. Using the same paint color for your walls, ceiling, built-ins, trim… everything. Trends change. Accent walls used to be all the rage; now, it’s color drenching. One creates pop, the other creates calm.
I do love using color to unify a space that feels too busy. You’ll see hints of it in my work. Sometimes, color drenching is recommended to make a room feel cozy, welcoming, and serene. Other times, it’s simply about streamlining a chaotic space.
That was my approach with this Cape Elizabeth, Maine home. This basement bathroom (which I worked on seven years ago) had a window but also some awkward angles. We didn’t want it to feel like a basement. The penny tile on the floor matched the vanity perfectly—so I ran it up the wall, too. I’m not usually a fan of gray, but this reads as a dusky blue-gray in a timeless way.
Now, the space feels open and airy—a classic. New England homes tend to lean crisp and unfussy.
Pro Tip: Shower glass is always worth doing right. Skip kits with clunky rails and hardware. We cut costs on the shower pan (not my call—you know I’d have added more color!), but the result is a functional space for teenage guests. If you live by the ocean in Maine, you’re always ready for summer visitors!
